As I wrap up my internship with The Development Group, I’m filled with gratitude and a sense of purpose that I’ll carry with me far beyond this chapter.

When I started last August, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. I was stepping into a world of community development, economic strategy, and public service — terms I’d heard before, but didn’t understand. What I found was more than just an office space or a checklist of tasks. I found a team committed to making a tangible difference in our county and a place that invited me to learn, contribute, and grow.

Over the past year, I’ve had the opportunity to take on a variety of responsibilities — some expected, others pleasantly surprising. I planned and helped execute events, designed graphics, managed meeting agendas and minutes, and even helped lead focus groups centered on the book Building a Vibrant Community. Each experience taught me something new. Not just about economic development, but leadership, collaboration, and creativity.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this internship was getting to see how behind-the-scenes efforts shape the health and vibrancy of a community. From business recruitment to beautification projects, it’s all connected to the people who live and work here. Being part of that work, even in a small way, has helped me to see the value of being informed and engaged in my community.

I also want to acknowledge the incredible team I worked alongside. Thank you for trusting me, mentoring me, and including me in meaningful work. Your investment in my growth has been invaluable, and I leave this internship with a deeper sense of confidence and direction.

As I prepare for what’s next — including pursuing Graphic Design in Pensacola and continuing to serve in other ways — I’m carrying lessons, values, and memories from this season with me. I’m proud to have been a part of The Development Group, and I’m excited to see how this experience will continue to shape my path.

Thank you all for an unforgettable experience.

With gratitude,
Emily Cockerham
