The The Development Group team had an exciting and productive time in Tallahassee during Rural Counties Day in January. Rural Counties Day provides an opportunity for Florida’s rural communities to engage directly with state leadership, advocate for shared priorities, and highlight the unique strengths of rural counties across the state.

Our staff participated in a full schedule of meetings with members of both the Florida House and Senate, advocating on behalf of Hardee County and reinforcing our local priorities.

We were honored to meet with Senate President Ben Albritton to discuss continued economic growth and opportunity for our community. The team also participated in Rural Economic Development Training through the Florida Rural Economic Development Association, gaining valuable insights and best practices to further support rural economic development efforts. The Legislative Networking Reception provided additional opportunities to connect with state legislators, key officials, and partners from across Florida.

Highlights from Rural Counties Day

This year’s Rural Counties Day saw record-breaking attendance, emphasizing the growing visibility and impact of Florida’s rural communities. From the kickoff reception on January 21 to the networking event on the Capitol Plaza on January 22, 30 of Florida’s 31 rural counties were represented.

Legislative guests included Florida State Senators Corey Simon, Tom Leek, along with Florida State Representatives Shane Abbott, Chuck Brannan, Chad JohnsonJason Shoaf, and Judson Sapp.

The 2025 Rural Legislative Champion Awards were presented to Representatives Jason Shoaf, Griff Griffitts, and Shane Abbott, and Senator Corey Simon. Additionally, the Bobby Payne Florida Rural Counties Advocacy Award was presented to Representative Jason Shoaf by Senator Corey Simon.

Representative Jason Shoaf said:
“Rural Florida is truly the backbone of our state. These Floridians put food on our tables, sustain generational mom-and-pop businesses, and foster one of the strongest senses of community anywhere in our nation. Being recognized with these awards reassures me that I am on the right track, and I remain committed to serving with the same passion and determination to strengthen and uplift Rural Florida.”

Showcasing Hardee County

The Development Group proudly represented Hardee County at the Rural Counties Showcase Expo alongside the Hardee County Chamber of Commerce, the Tourism Development Council, and the Board of County Commissioners. This collaborative presence allowed us to highlight Hardee County’s deep roots, strong sense of community, and continued potential for growth.

We also met with Deputy Secretary of Commerce Jason Mahon and Representative Kaylee Tuck to further advocate for Hardee County’s priorities at the state level.

More than 30 counties showcased their communities with booths featuring local products, giveaways, and insights into the richness of rural Florida. A press conference held on the Capitol Courtyard steps featured remarks from FREDA leadership and legislative partners, with coverage from statewide media outlets. Attendees also enjoyed a catfish lunch served to more than 1,000 participants.

Continuing the Momentum

Rural Counties Day 2026 was a valuable opportunity to strengthen partnerships, share our community’s story, and ensure Hardee County’s voice is heard in Tallahassee. We look forward to building on these relationships and continuing our advocacy and professional development efforts throughout the year!
